Becoming disciples

Last time we looked at the central part, Jesus at the Centre. This time we'll take a brief look at Becoming Disciples.

Becoming disciples
What does it mean, really, to be a disciple? Clearly it's about following Jesus, staying with him, watching and listening, having a go at his work under his supervision, and eventually being entrusted with little projects. We remain servants and disciples, but he gives us growing responsibility according to our character and our gifts. And those gifts we also receive from him.

Although it's not often seen this way, we need to understand that we begin following Jesus long before we believe in him. And we continue following him for as long as we live. Salvation is an event along the way. It's an important point on the trail for sure, but by the time we believe, most of us have already, in reality, been following Jesus for some time.

We need to keep following, keep learning, keep practising the work he gives us to do. Anyone who claims to believe but is not actively following Jesus and learning from him is sadly mistaken! And if we are not Jesus' disciples, who then are we following?
