Jesus at the Centre

Let's take a look at the central part of JDMC, the hub, the part around which everything else revolves. It's hardly surprising to hear that Jesus is at the centre. It would be disturbing if he was not!

If Jesus is not at the heart of your life, how are you going to engage with any of the things he calls you to do?

This was the problem the rich, young ruler had. He wanted to know what else he should do in addition to all the rules he had followed and the pains he had taken. And the answer was devastating. Jesus said, ' Sell everything and give it away to those who need it; and follow me'. And the young man couldn't do it. He went away sad. (Matthew 19:16-30)

In part one of JDMC we ask the questions, 'Is Jesus at the centre in your lives?' and, 'Are there parts of life where he takes second place?' And we suggest readers think about the areas of money, friends, hobbies, family life and work.

These are deeply challenging questions, the same sort of questions that the rich, young ruler had to ask himself. Will you walk away from Jesus because the sacrifice is too hard? Or will you gladly give up everything else in order to follow him?

Now make it even more challenging. What other things in your own life can you add to the list of areas to think about? Having Jesus at the centre sounds lovely, comfortable and good. But are we willing to pay the necessary price?
